October 20, 2009 - General Meeting
Our guest speaker for October will be Denise Welch, President/CEO of Computerworks,
Inc., a local personalized computer consulting company based in Palm Desert. She will
share with us new ways to market a creative business using social media tools, a part of
"viral marketing". If you are looking for creative, innovative and most importantly
inexpensive techniques to spread the word about your writing, art or music, then don't
miss this meeting.
November 17, 2009 - General Meeting
Margaret Seeley, retired kindergarten teacher and writer, will recite a little known
Dr. Seuss poem I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew. She will also discuss how Dr. Seuss first got published and other interesting facts about the writer who continues to be the biggest money maker for Random House Children's Books. You will hear how
Dr. Seuss was a genius with words and goes far beyond children's literature.
Lunch of green eggs and ham will not be served.
December 15, 2009 - General Meeting
Have you ever wondered if editors are the only ones who alter books? Julie Warren,
Public Relations Manager for the Palm Springs Public Library, will discuss the journey of
an Altered Book Art Project. She will share how this project began and how the
Palm Springs Public Library and Palm Springs Art Museum partnered together to present
this program to the community for three years. Julie will display some of the actual art works that were created by the artists.
January 19, 2010 - General Meeting
Gardening guru and author of Palm Springs-Style: the Complete Guide to Plants &
Practices for Gorgeous Dryland Gardens, Maureen Gilmer, will share her ideas of
growing her love of gardening into a business. Maureen has written 15 books on
gardening and the environment, she writes "Yardsmart", a nationally syndicated garden
column, is the host of the DIY Network series "Weekend Gardening", and is the
gardening guru on KMIR TV. This program is guaranteed to be a blooming treat.
February 16, 2010 - General Meeting
The Virginia Waring International Piano Competition encourages and promotes musical
culture in the Southern California Desert through its educational outreach programs, and
by holding a biennial piano competition with participants from around the world. Pianist
Patricia Taylor Lee, the Artistic Director of the Virginia Waring International Piano
Competition, will discuss this International, yet local, piano competition and her career as
a performer, lecturer, author and judge of piano competitions.
March 16, 2010 - General Meeting (speaker not confirmed)
Stories and narratives have been shared in every culture and in every land, as a means of
entertainment, education, preservation of culture and in order to instill moral values.
Crucial elements of stories and storytelling include plot and characters, as well as the
narrative point of view. O'Jay Vanegas, Director of Education of the Aqua Caliente
Cultural Museuam, will talk about promoting the stories and culture of the indigenous
people of the Americas.

May 18, 2010 - General Meeting
Ekphrasis (or ecphrasis) is the written description of visual work of art and has been practiced since ancient times. Since Pen Women are writers and artists, this is the perfect venue for our artist members to display their visual works of art and for our writer members to write prose or poetry inspired by the piece of art. Pen Woman and poet Dessa Reed will coordinate and present the results of the combined efforts of artists and writers.
